What’s your most important backup setting, and what taught you that?

I want to build a quick-reference thread for new members who are shopping or newly installed in 2026. If you could only adjust one setting before an outage, what setting gives you the biggest real-world improvement, and what made you realize it mattered.

Was it picking the right reserve percentage, tightening what’s on the backup panel, changing when the battery charges, setting export rules, or deciding how aggressive it should be about saving power. What’s the reason behind your choice, and what tradeoff did you accept.

Drop your one setting and the lesson behind it. The differences between setups are exactly what makes this thread useful.

My most important setting is reserve percentage. I keep it higher than I thought I needed, because the first time an outage started at night I realized how fast you can burn through power if you are not paying attention. Tradeoff is I keep less battery available for daily savings, but I sleep better.

My most important setting is making sure the battery charges before a storm window, even if it is not the most optimized mode. I got caught once with a half full battery and it was frustrating. Tradeoff is you might pull from the grid more, but you are ready when it matters.
