What is the lesson you learned in your first real outage? so others don’t have to

What was your biggest “backup power reality check” during your first real outage, and what would you tell a new installer to expect? A lot of people picture backup power as automatic and effortless, then the first outage teaches you what actually happens.

What surprised you most, like runtime being shorter than you thought, certain loads behaving weird, a setting you forgot about, the system switching differently than expected, or the stress of deciding what to turn off. I’d love to hear the specific “I didn’t realize that mattered” moment.

If you can, share one thing you changed afterward, like reserve percent, backup loads, time-of-use settings, or a simple household habit that made the next outage easier.

I learned the hard way that reserve percent and peak surge behavior matter more than I thought. The system worked, but a couple of start-up surges made it feel unpredictable, and I kept watching the app like it was a stock chart. I bumped the reserve up a bit and stopped trying to run everything like normal.

I didn’t realize the system can behave different depending on settings, like time of use or export rules, even during an outage. After that I did a planned test on a weekend and wrote down what actually stays on.

Big surprise was how much little things add up, like TVs, game consoles, and random chargers. After that we made a quick “outage mode” list and just unplug a few things right away so it feels less stressful.
