How do you balance grid vs solar use on short days?

Now that the days are getting shorter here in Connecticut, I’ve started leaning on the grid a bit more like mostly charging the battery overnight when rates are low, then switching back to solar during the day. It feels like a good way to stretch my storage and avoid draining the battery too deeply when production’s weak. Curious if anyone else is doing something similar? I’m wondering if it’s worth fine-tuning the charge schedule more like maybe set the inverter to pull from the grid only when state of charge drops below a certain point. Have you seen any long-term difference in battery health or overall costs running that kind of hybrid setup?

That's a smart plan, you've totally got the right idea for tackling those short CT days! Charging up when rates are dirt cheap overnight and letting the solar just top you up during the weak midday sun is definitely the most cost-effective approach. To check if you need to manually fine-tune anything, you should verify two settings in your system's software. First, confirm your Minimum State of Charge floor is set, typically 10-20%. Once the battery hits that low point, the system must switch to the grid to avoid damaging the battery, so it takes care of the deep discharge problem for you automatically. Second, double-check that your utility's Time-of-Use schedule is up to date in the system. If those two items are solid, the software is already doing the heavy lifting on the longevity and cost front, so you probably don't need to overthink the fine-tuning!
