Battery shows plenty left but inverter shuts off early, what should I check? this is confusing

I’m a little nervous posting this because I’m not sure if I’m misunderstanding something basic or if my setup has a real issue. My home battery will show a pretty high percent remaining, but the inverter shuts down early when I’m running loads. It feels like it taps out way sooner than it should, and then when everything stops, the battery percent still looks like it has a lot left.

A specific example was a recent outage where I ran a few normal things and felt good, then the inverter alarmed and shut down even though the battery app was still showing a comfortable number. It was satisfying knowing the system worked at all, but that early cutoff made me anxious because I can’t predict runtime. Where do you start troubleshooting this, voltage sag under load, BMS low voltage cutoff, cable gauge losses, or inverter low voltage settings that might be set too aggressively?
 
I’d check the inverter event log for the exact shutdown reason first. Low voltage, overcurrent, overtemp, or comms loss all feel similar in the moment. If it’s low voltage, then compare the inverter cutoff setting vs the BMS cutoff and see which one is tripping first.
 
Cable and connection losses can be sneaky here. If the battery is far from the inverter or the lugs are not perfect, you can drop enough volts under load to trip the inverter. I’d check cable gauge and length, torque on lugs, and look for any warm connectors after a short heavy load test.
 
no worries OP. you’re dealing with voltage sag. think of your battery like a water tank with a small straw. if you're not using much power, the level looks high
but when you pull a big sip (like a microwave or AC), the pressure drops instantly. your inverter sees that temporary drop, freaks out, and shuts down to protect itself, even though there’s still plenty of water left in the tank

checking your cable thickness and tightening your connections is the best place to start

If the inverter is shutting down under normal loads, treat it like a safety signal and do not keep pushing it until you understand why. Loose lugs, undersized cable, and overheating connections can cause voltage drop and can be a fire risk. Shut down safely and inspect connections, and if you are not comfortable working on the DC side, get a qualified installer to check it. Document the event, load level, and any alarms so you can troubleshoot with real data.
